Can anyone tell me who wrote the original story of Cinderella?
The original story is not the family friendly version that Disney created. It's actually very dark and violent. I know at one point in the story the step-sisters actually cut off there toes to make there feet fit inside the glass slipper. That's just a little taste of how dark the original is. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me who wrote the original story. Also if you could tell me of some other stories like this one (stories that were watered down for families but the originals were anything but cute) I would greatly appreciate it.
This is actually a great question. The answer is that no one knows who originally came up with the Cinderella story. Versions of it exist in many countries around the world. The earliest version actually comes to us from Greco-Egyptian Antiquity.
The earliest European tale is "La Gatta Cenerentola" or "The Hearth Cat" which appears in the book "Il Pentamerone" by the Italian fairy-tale collector Giambattista Basile in 1635. This version formed the basis of later versions published by the French author Charles Perrault and the German Brothers Grimm.
The Perrault version has most of the elements we associate with Cinderella today - the fairy godmother, the transformed pumpkin, the glass slippers.
The really dark, violent version appears in the compilation by the Brothers Grimm.
However, neither Perrault nor the Grimms can be considered the authors of the story - it existed long before them as oral tradition, they were just the first to put the legend on paper.
