any suggestions on how to care for and treat the natural wood in my home.. ?
Hi everyone, i have alot of natural wood in my home. This being the most favorite quality about the house and also the most frustrating. the staircase and half the walls are wood planks.. stained cherry .. any drop of moisture or scrape and it leaves marks, i use old english but its so temporary , the cabinets in my kitchen are original to the house and beautiful but at the edges they are getting rough, like the everyday grab , open and closing is wearing off the stain or finish. i would love to bring this wood back to life and bring out its beauty.. any suggestions on products or home tips.. thank you all so much.
Put about 1/2 cup of olive oil in a dish, add about a tablespoon of real lemon juice (fresh squeezed or from a jar) mix it and then use a soft cloth, like a cloth diaper, tap it in the mixture and clean away. For ever day cleaning, get an empty stray bottle and put water in it. Just spritz a little water on a clean cloth and dust away. The lemon and oil should be used about once a month. Seeing the Light in the Cooking Area
I'm sure you know that proper illumination is essential to enhance your work efficiency. That's why you have a study lamp right on your desk or work-table. In the same way you should have proper lighting in the kitchen. You may not notice it, but the dim atmosphere adds to the bother of cooking four meals day in and day out.
'Proper' illumination requires you to design the lighting system in your house with care. Tables, desks, and counter tops must receive shadowless light. In the kitchen, low-hanging cabinets tend to obstruct natural as well as artificial light. Since you can't rearrange the larger items of furniture, the easier option is to put in under cabinet lighting units which give light directly onto the work area.
Your kitchen needs to be cheery and bright. Otherwise cooking will be a drag. Modern kitchen furniture has recognized this fact by manufacturing cabinet units which have recessed lighting fixtures. Maybe you're good at 'house improvement' yourself. Or your spouse is. Anyway, it's a good, clean, easy and fun project! You may want to play safe and get a regular electrical contractor in to do the wiring.
Fresh wiring is a costly affair. You can try out alternative lighting systems which are readily available. Way lighting especially designed for children's rooms is an ideal solution. These are battery-operated and require no wiring. All you need to do is to pull off the backing strip and press-fit these dinky devices against the lower surface of the cabinets over the kitchen counter. When you need them, just give them a tap and they're on. Another tap makes them go off! They are the least expensive lighting system on the market.
These units are unobtrusive since they're going to be under the cabinets. So you need not worry about issues like whether the new lighting fixtures will go well with the existing decor. The only way they'll come to your notice is when you switch them on!
Rewiring the kitchen for new lights depends on how much time you spend in the kitchen. If it is minimal or occasional, then you can put this project aside for a later date. Cooking over a dimly lit counter for any appreciable length of time, however, is a different matter, and this justifies the cost of putting up new lights as soon as possible. There are so many really low-cost alternatives to the standard lighting fixtures nowadays that budgetary considerations just pale away.
You may even want to put new lights in other areas where you think the light is scanty. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the difference the new lights will make to your work and your working environment. That's reason enough to get these lights in and working as soon as possible!
